Caring for My Parents from NYC

When my father underwent knee surgery in Lucknow, I felt the weight of distance like never before. Living in New York City, thousands of miles away, the thought of not being physically present during such a crucial time was overwhelming. Yet, I quickly realized that love and care don’t always have to be bound by geography they can be extended through trust, planning, and the right support system.

That’s where India Wapsi stepped in as an unexpected lifeline. They not only coordinated directly with the hospital but also arranged professional attendants to be by my father’s side. From ensuring he was comfortable after surgery to handling daily routines, their presence gave me peace of mind. It felt as though I had an extra set of eyes and hands caring for him when mine couldn’t be there.

Another comfort came in the form of monthly wellness checks. These visits ensured my parents weren’t just managing physically but also emotionally. The consistent routine provided stability for them and reassurance for me. It’s easy to overlook the little things medications on time, gentle encouragement to walk a few extra steps, or simply having someone check in but they make all the difference in recovery.

What kept me truly connected, though, were the regular email updates. Each message detailed progress, highlighted any concerns, and often included small moments like my father’s first confident walk post-surgery. These updates bridged the miles and brought a sense of closeness that phone calls alone couldn’t always provide.

Caring for parents from afar will never be easy, but with the right support, it is possible. This experience taught me that while I may live in NYC, my heart and care can still reach all the way home to Lucknow.
